The lack of representation of Black mothers in the performing arts perpetuates harmful stereotypes and erases our experiences and invalidates us as artist. MUVA is dedicated to challenging these barriers by centering the stories and experiences of Black performing artists who are also mothers.
Our ultimate goal is to celebrate and amplify the voices of Black performing artists who are also mothers with MUVA showcase and MUVA Says... podcast.
MUVA Showcase
A one-hour scripted performance highlighting the history of
mothering dancers and honored the legacy of women-owned dance venues in
Manhattan including Duane Park, the host venue. We provided childcare for
rehearsals and performances and featured the work of two artist mothers:
- Cheri Moon, Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, performed a storytelling
piece about learning the Sojourner Truth passage she learned from her
grandmother, culminating in performance of "Ain't I a Woman."
- Poison Ivory, Queen of Burlesque, performed reclaiming her sexuality with
me singing live "Kissing You" by Des'ree, a song that resonates with the
childhood memories of our mothers.
MUVA Says Podcast: a first of its kind, documents our experience and artistic careers in real time, creating a space to ideate on solutions and share future needs. Season 1 has Six 30-minute episodes featuring conversations with Dr. Sabiyha Prince, Miss Poison Ivory, Mariella Price, Sema Konur, Ellie Steingarber, and Queen Ravenden.
Throughout the episodes, we will be discussing a variety of topics related to motherhood and creativity. Our questions will delve into our guest's personal experiences, including their relationship with their own mother, the most influential and detrimental maternal figures in their life, and their own journey towards becoming a mother.
